In a commendable move aimed at reducing overcrowding in correctional facilities, a rights advocacy group, Anchorage Montana Deck, has facilitated the release of two inmates from the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ogun State.
The inmates regained their freedom on Friday after the group reportedly paid for their release. Speaking on the initiative, representatives of Anchorage Montana Deck stated that the gesture was part of a broader campaign to support prison decongestion efforts across Nigeria.
In addition to securing the inmates’ freedom, the group also donated a pumping machine to the facility — a gesture welcomed by authorities as a contribution to the improvement of the centre’s water supply and infrastructure.One of the freed inmates, overwhelmed with gratitude, praised the organisation for their intervention. He reflected on his time behind bars, noting that the experience had transformed his outlook on life.
“I’ve learnt enough lessons to become a better person,” he said.
The intervention by Anchorage Montana Deck highlights the growing role of civil society groups in justice reform and the reintegration of ex-offenders into society.
